Is online First Aid certification valid in Australia?
Yes.
Online vs In-person First Aid Courses
Most First Aid courses are fully in-person, or hybrid of in-person and online components.
Fully online First Aid training courses are available, however your own mannequin will be required and due to the physical techniques required, it can add a layer of difficulty to the learning process.
Training courses with both in-person and online components are becoming the most popular structure, saving time and delivering more convenience and flexibility.
Check your employment requirements
Check your employer requirements against the unit codes to ensure the correct course is selected ie HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Each course will specify what units are included.
For example, our ETA Training First Aid Course includes;
- HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- HLTAID010 - Provide basic emergency life support
- HLTAID011 - Provide First Aid
Training and assessment delivered on behalf of Allens Training Pty Ltd RTO 90909.
Check the course is nationally accredited
The course provider must be either an RTO or accredited partner of RTO. ETA is an accredited partner of Allens Training Pty Ltd RTO 90909, which is why you will see 'Training and assessment delivered on behalf of Allens Training Pty Ltd RTO 90909' across our training courses.
Allens Training are among Australia’s largest training providers, delivering quality nationally recognised courses to many students each year. Allens delivers vocational education and training services across all States and Territories of Australia, and is a family owned business that has been in practice for over 20 years. Allen's are widely recognised as a leader in the industry.
What is the latest First Aid certification?
The most recent and up to date first aid certification unit is Provide First Aid HLTAID011.
This is the minimum certification required by most employers in Australia.
Are HLTAID011 and HLTAID003 the same?
HLTAID011 is the most recent certification and supersedes HLTAID003.
How long does First Aid certification last?
Current industry standards recommend renewing the First Aid certification every 3 years and the CPR component should be renewed every 12 months.
Online + In-person = Mega-convenient
Instead of all learnings being delivered in person over a full day (or two!), having part of the unit learning material in an online component provides a far more convenient option for our clients.
Class Size
Check the maximum class size of your provider to ensure it is acceptable, so that you’ll get enough help and hands-on training.
We keep our classes to a maximum of 12 to ensure plenty of one-on-one help for all participants.
Are there after hours First Aid Training courses available?
We don't currently have an after hours course for our First Aid Courses, however we may do this in the future. Our LVR & CPR and CPR Courses both have after hours options.
What else to look out for
Check your course is interactive, and up to date.
Offering online components has been an excellent modern update to First Aid Training Courses and can be an important factor for many when evaluating course providers.
After hours courses are also super convenient for those unavailable during normal 9-5 hours

Extra Information - WA Code of Practice
The WA State Government provides a comprehensive summary of all aspects of First Aid in the workplace, see the most up to date First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice here on the WA State Government website. We’ve pulled relevant information below for convenience from page 16 of the Western Australian Code of practice - First aid in the workplace
Types of first aid training
As a minimum first aiders should hold nationally recognised statement/s of attainment issued by a registered training organisation (RTO) for the nationally endorsed first aid unit of competency Provide First Aid or a course providing equivalent skills. A higher level or additional training may be required to ensure your first aiders have appropriate skills for the risks you have identified in your workplace.
For example, additional training may be required where:
- Work is remote or isolated
- There are risks from dangerous substances such as cyanide or arsenic
- Specialist first aid equipment or a first aid room is installed in the workplace
- Children are present in the workplace
- You have identified psychological risks
- Workers have existing medical conditions which may require first aid
Where workers or others at the workplace have known existing medical conditions, first aiders should be trained to respond to these conditions if the topic has not been covered in previous first aid training.
Frequency of training for first aiders
First aiders should attend training on a regular basis to refresh their first aid knowledge and skills and to confirm their competence to provide first aid. Refresher training in CPR should be carried out annually and first aid qualifications should be renewed every three years.
Number of trained first aiders
The following ratios are recommended:
- Low risk workplaces – one first aider for every 50 workers
- High risk workplaces – one first aider for every 25 workers
- Remote high risk workplaces – one first aider for every 10 workers
