Our fully online course offers real-time training across the Australian Capital Territory, delivered via virtual classroom. You’ll learn how to test and tag appliances safely using a Portable Appliance Tester (PAT), all while meeting AS/NZS 3760:2022 standards.

Course Overview

Testing and tagging is an important process to ensure the safety of portable electrical appliances in Canberra and Capital Territory workplaces. This involves a visual inspection, followed by testing the appliance with a Portable Appliance Tester (PAT) in compliance with Work Health and Safety (WHS) or Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations and workplace codes of practice.

Students enrolling in this course will:

  • Gain the knowledge and skills to apply safe working practices and follow procedures for hazard identification and risk control when entering a work area.
  • Learn to perform in-service safety inspections with precision, ensuring compliance with workplace safety standards.
  • Acquire the expertise to test portable electrical equipment, including appliances, cords, plugs, and sockets, as per the guidelines of Australian Standard AS/NZS 3760.

This course is designed to equip participants with the confidence and competency to perform testing and tagging safely and effectively in various workplace environments across The Australian Capital Territory.

Qualifications Issued

A nationally recognised Statement of Attainment will be issued for the following units of competency:

  • UEECD0007 - Apply work health and safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace
  • UEERL0003 - Conduct in-service safety testing of electrical cord connected equipment and cord assemblies

The test and tag certification is identical to the in-person course and is nationally recognised across Australia.

Assessment Activities

Participants in this course will complete a combination of written and practical assessment tasks to demonstrate their understanding and competency.

Performance tasks - The assessor will observe and discuss the following performance tasks:

·       Apply work health and safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace on two occasions, including:  

·       Conduct a risk assessment – this is completed on the student’s phone, tablet, or computer during the training session

·       Confirm (safe) isolation of an electrical supply and isolation of potential electrical and non-electrical hazards has been completed by an authorised person

·       Discuss and select the most appropriate ladder for the work activity and perform a safety check

·       The assessor will provide an example of a person performing work at heights

·       Discuss and apply correct manual handling techniques

·       Discuss safe methods of removing an electric shock victim from a live electrical situation

Follow legally compliant workplace procedures to:

·       Conduct in-service safety testing for two (2) different electrical cords and three (3) items of cord-connected equipment

Documentation – The student must complete all documentation according to the required standard:

·       Risk Assessment

·       Incident Report form

·       Equipment Workplace Register form

·       Equipment testing tags

Theory assessment - Multiple choice and short answer questions to be completed online before the start of the training session. Students can refer to their Learner resource material.

Students must have their electrical cords and cord-connected equipment.

Entry Requirements

This course is suitable for anyone, no prior electrical knowledge or experience is required. This delivery method is for students who can not make it to our classroom sessions. You will need your own Portable Appliance Tester.

To enrol, participants must meet the following requirements:

Equipment: You will need a Portable Appliance Tester (PAT) and 10 appliances/items from your home or workplace for testing during the session. Please visit our online store or contact the office if you would like to purchase a PAT.

Visual Ability: Able to visually inspect equipment.

Safe Environment: Students must be in a safe environment when attending their virtual classroom practical session, such as a workplace or home office with enough space for the appliances to be tested safely. The location should be well-lit. Locations such as a bedroom/bed are not considered a safe environment. The trainer must be able to observe you using the PAT to test the appliances.

Practical Skills: Capable of performing practical demonstrations, including:

  • Identifying hazards and conducting risk assessments.

Reading, Writing, and Numeracy Skills:

  • Ability to complete and interpret testing and tagging requirements.
  • Competency in completing Incident Report forms and Risk Assessment documentation during the assessment.

Digital Literacy:

To complete this online course, you need basic digital skills. You must be able to:

  • Use a computer or device to access the internet
  • Navigate a learning platform to complete theory tasks at your own pace
  • Participate in a virtual classroom with a trainer using video and audio
  • Complete and submit assessments online

These requirements ensure all participants can successfully engage with the course content and assessments.

Course Delivery Mode and Duration

This course is comprised of two components.  An online self-paced Work Health and Safety theory unit and a practical session delivered entirely online via a virtual classroom (Zoom) format - making it accessible to participants Australia-wide.

Delivery Mode:

  • Online Self-Paced WHS Component: Complete approximately 2-3 hours of WHS training before attending the virtual session.  This unit requires the student to complete a series of video & written content and submit assessments for marking.  This unit must be completed before the virtual classroom (zoom) practical session.
  • Interactive Virtual Classroom: Students log into a virtual online classroom for their practical session through a Zoom link sent to them before class commencement. Students can ask questions and will be shown how to use the Portable Appliance Tester (PAT) with plenty of opportunities to practice and become familiar with the tester.

Duration:

  • Online WHS Component: 2-3 hours (self-paced).
  • Virtual Classroom Training: No longer than 3 hours.

You do not need to be an electrician or have prior electrical knowledge or experience.

Course Training Day Information

To successfully complete the Online Test and Tag Course, please ensure the following requirements are met on the day of your virtual classroom session:

  • Logging in: Log in to the session using the Zoom link sent to you the day before the course.  Students must log in at least 5 minutes prior to the scheduled start time. Late arrivals may not be permitted to attend.
  • Verify Your USI: Ensure your Unique Student Identifier (USI) is verified before the session.
  • Complete Pre-Course Learning: Must have 100% completion of the online learning material prior to joining the virtual classroom.
  • Equipment Required: You will need a Portable Appliance Tester (PAT) and 10 appliances/items from your home or workplace for testing during the session. Please contact the office if you would like to purchase a PAT
  • Camera Access: Have a working camera to allow the trainer to observe you using the PAT and testing appliances.
  • Provide Identification: Have a valid photo ID ready to present when requested.

Participants who do not meet these requirements may need to reschedule their live training session.

Rescheduling & Cancellation Policy

We understand unforeseen circumstances may require bookings to be rescheduled.  To reschedule an in-person or a virtual course, please email us at admin@etatraining.com.au or phone the office on 1300 858 095 during office hours.

If we receive your reschedule request two (2) or more business days before your original scheduled course, you will be offered a reschedule or issued a credit note.  If there is a subsequent reschedule request meeting the two (2) or more business days stipulation, a 50% administration fee will be charged.

If you withdraw less than 2 days prior to your course, or fail to turn up on the day of your training or are denied entry to the course please contact the office immediately to reschedule.  Fees may apply.

How Do I Enrol in the Online Course?

How Long Does the Online Test and Tag Course Certificate Last?

The nationally recognised Statement of Attainment you receive upon completing the Online Test and Tag Course does not have an expiry date. Once you are deemed competent, there is no requirement to renew your qualification.

However, compliance with AS/NZS3760 standards requires that all testing and inspection of equipment be carried out by a Competent Person. To maintain competency, it’s important to stay updated with:

  • Workplace regulations.
  • Relevant standards such as AS/NZS 3760.
  • Codes of Practice and industry guidelines.

Staying informed ensures your skills and knowledge remain current, allowing you to competently perform testing and tagging in line with workplace safety requirements.

What equipment do I need for the online Test and Tag course?

A Portable Appliance Tester (PAT). If you don’t have one, you can purchase a PAT tester here or contact us for assistance.

10 appliances/items from home or work to test during the session (even damaged appliances and leads).

A working camera to allow the trainer to observe you using the PAT.

When Will I Receive My Online Test and Tag Certificate?

In most cases, your Statement of Attainment will be issued electronically on the same day you complete your training. If there are delays, your certificate will be issued by the following business day and sent to you via email.

If you require your certificate urgently, please notify your trainer, and they will prioritise processing your paperwork to ensure you receive it promptly.
